All you need to know about the Calanques National Park

  • Creation of the National Park: 18 April 2012 (signing of the decree)
  • Location: Bouches-du-Rhône (13)
  • Land area: 8,500 hectares, 3 communes (Marseille, Cassis and La Ciotat)
  • Marine core: 43,500 hectares
  • Adherence area: 2,630 hectares, 3 communes (Marseille, Cassis and La Penne-sur-Huveaune)
  • Adjacent maritime area: 97,800 ha
  • Biodiversity: 140 protected terrestrial animal and plant species; 60 heritage marine species
  • Visitor numbers: around 2 million visitors a year on land and at sea

The Calanques National Park is :

  • the only national park in Europe that is simultaneously terrestrial, marine and peri-urban
  • the only continental, island and marine national park in a Mediterranean environment
  • the first national park to be set up in mainland France since 1979; the last three national parks were all created overseas
  • France’s 10th national park

The Calanques By the paths

Whether you’re a keen hiker or a family stroller, discover the Calanques at your own pace… The Calanques link Marseille to Cassis along almost 20km of waymarked footpaths. The Calanques, an unspoilt area in need of protection…
For your safety and the preservation of sensitive sites, please respect the area, stay on the marked paths and bring your rubbish bins. There are no restaurants, accommodation or water points on the footpaths.

Did you know?

The Calanques have yielded an abundance of the magnificent “Cassis stone” that has made this small fishing port famous the world over, for use in the construction of Mediterranean ports (Alexandria, Algiers, Piraeus, Marseille…). Today, it is used to make decorative objects and souvenirs… Underwater springs: mysterious rivers… The Massif des Calanques is a receptacle of fresh water. It is home to a major underwater circulation system.

Preparing for your trip to the Calanques

Practical tips

  • On Sundays, we recommend using the Parking des Gorguettes car park, a 30-minute walk from the centre of Cassis: free parking + shuttle bus (Line 373 in season: €1.70 return, and Line 372 all year round) to the pedestrianised Route des Crêtes
  • No sanitary facilities in the Calanques (no toilets or water points)
  • Shaded area at the start of the trail
  • Access restricted from 1 June to 30 September: check conditions before your visit
